What is Yoga?

Yoga Lessons with Dancers Studio - St. Paul, MN

The word yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India where yoga originated. At Dancers Studio we think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit.

What is commonly known as "yoga," refers to the practice of physical postures or poses. Many people think that yoga is just stretching and while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits.

Our instructor is great at modifying the class for all skill levels and poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement vinyasa style or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose.

The Benefits of Yoga

  1. Yoga has positions that act upon various joints of the body including joints that are rarely exercised. At Dancers Studio, Teresa will give you an overall body workout that is easily adjusted to your skill level.
  2. Increasing lubrication of the joints, ligaments and tendons is also a benefit of Yoga. It has been found that the body, which may have been quite rigid, starts experiencing a remarkable increase in flexibility which can create harmony throughout the rest of the body.
  3. Yoga massages all organs of the body. Yoga is the only form of activity which massages internal glands and organs of the body in a thorough, wholesome manner. This stimulation of the organs in turn benefits us by keeping away disease.
  4. Yoga is an excellent way to tone your muscles! Muscles that have become flaccid and weak are stimulated repeatedly to shed excess flab and weight.
  5. Increased flexibility and strength can help prevent the causes of some types of back pain. Daily activities can cause tightness and spinal compression, which you can address with Yoga here at Dancers Studio. Yoga also improves your body alignment.
